How long have you been in business?
AKL was founded in 2002. Neal Gerdes, our president has been a licensed architect since 1995 and has been involved in building and design since his high school days in the early 1980's.
What is your primary product or service?
We provide architectural services on a variety of project types, including retail, hospitality, medical, educational and industrial, but our emphasis has been in residential and commercial projects.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
My family members going back quite a few generations on both my mother's and father's sides have quite often chosen one of two career paths - engineering or art. I feel that these two interests combined in me to help me choose architecture as my career direction. My interest in architecture started fairly early in junior high when I found that manual drafting was fun and easy for me and when our assignment was to design a house, I was hooked.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
It's very hard to differentiate your business from others without a face to face meeting with the client. After all, the architecture industry is about service, so we're all trying to give our best services to the client. But our firm is known for our ability to help our clients by taking the fear and uncertainty out of the process. We come to the table with the experience required to make the process understandable and smooth and have previous relationships with villages and contractors to ensure this.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We are currently based out of our Lake Villa office but have plans to expand with the economy.

For most projects, we prefer to meet at the job site so that we can immediately give you our thoughts about your project, pointing out possible alternate courses of action.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept personal check, money order or cash.
Which areas do you service?
With architectural licenses in Illinois and Wisconsin, we serve the all communities along the Chicago to Milwaukee corridor.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
We are a smaller architectural firm so you will have direct contact with our president, Neal Gerdes.
What are your hours of operation?
We are open from 8:00am to 5:00pm each day and from 8:00am to noon on Saturdays.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
A real compliment to us is a referral to a a friend. If you refer us to a friend of yours, we know that you truly had a good experience with us.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
Wow, tough question. There are so many to choose from...Churchill, Kennedy, Jesus, Lincoln, Marin Luther King. I can't think of one that stands out of the crowd as my favorite. I tend to use several on a regular basis since they refer to architecture but would have to say that my favorite is whichever fits the situation at that moment.
