We would never recommend the use of Ted Wanland (twanland@wanlandbuilders.com) of Wanland Builders, Wanland Building Company, Inc. or Wanland Development Co, LLC. Ted was hired to construct our custom home in August of 2014. Expecting a hands on, easy to work with contractor, we were surprised to find the very opposite. The project severely lacked supervision by Ted, and as a result it took significantly longer to build our home than it should have. Almost every aspect of our home was not completed properly on the first attempt. From ducting to siding to painting (to name only a few), work had to be redone again and again resulting in multiple delays and additional costs to us. Ted often complained to us that we were being too picky, or that we should not expect perfection. While we weren’t looking for perfection, we did expect things to be done correctly. On more than one occasion we had to monitor the situation to make sure that Ted did not cut corners when attempting to rectify an issue. Attention to detail was almost nonexistent. There was very little done to protect the completed work of various trades which resulted in subsequent damage by other subs. Ted would pass the buck onto someone else, come up with a crazy explanation as to why something occurred, or would refuse to warranty the repair work claiming again we were being too picky. An example of this would be a 2.5 inch scratch on the center pane of our front door made by one of his subs. It is still there today. By the end of the build, all professionalism by Mr. Wanland was lost. He would not return phone calls. He would storm off property. He would make demands for payment on items he had not yet completed. In December of 2015, after passing what we were told was the final inspection, Ted told us we could move into the home. We finally moved on to Punch List items. Wanland Builders’ contract states that they will complete the punch list in 30 days. In August of 2016, while Ted was still working on the Punch List substantially outside of his contractual 30 days, we decided to get copies of the Certificate of Occupancy for our own records. It was then that we learned that Ted had actually only completed three of the required four final inspections, and he never applied for our Occupancy Certificate. Our village was more than understanding and imposed a small fine considering they could have charged Wanland Builders hundreds of dollars per day dating back to the day we moved into the home. Ted attempted to blame everyone else for this “oversight”. Wanland Builders never paid the fine and shortly afterwards walked off the job never responding to us again. He does, however, still send his seasonal advertising flyers to us.  A further example of his lack of attention to detail.  If you are looking for a quality home builder, look elsewhere.
